Melvin C. ""Slick"" Duncan

December 31, 1923 — June 17, 2014

Melvin C. "Slick" Duncan passed away on June 17th at home in San Angelo, TX. He was a very "young at heart" 90 years old. He had recently enjoyed the constant company of his loving family and many good friends whose visits he looked forward to and he enjoyed so much. He also enjoyed all the TLC he received when they would visit but he knew no one could take better care of him than his sweet Emma.
Melvin was born in Cumberland, OK, on Dec 31, 1923. He served in the Marine Corp during WWII and was in the 5th Marine Division who conquered the Pacific Island of Iwo Jima. He was a member of Easy Company, the Company that raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi. Being a United States Marine was always a great source of pride for Melvin and he truly felt "once a Marine, always a Marine." He had maintained contact with many of his buddies in the Corp and felt a special bond with them.
When he got out of the Marines he moved to Mertzon, TX, to work in the oilfield. He started as a roughneck and worked his way up to being a Driller and then Tool Pusher for Ray Morris Drilling Company. He moved his family to McCamey, TX, in January of 1959 and drilled many of the wells west of town. In 1970 he started his own business, Duncan Lease Services, Inc., and operated it until he retired in 1990.
Melvin married Louise "Sis" Freitag in Mertzon, TX, in 1948. They had three children, Deanne Adams of McCamey, Dwayne Duncan and wife Kathy of Levelland, and Debra Duncan of McCamey. Louise preceded him in death in 1978.
Melvin married Ruth Kennedy in 1980 in McCamey. She preceded him in death in 1989.
In 1990, Melvin married Emma Killgore. They lived in McCamey until 2008 when they moved to San Angelo.
In addition, Melvin was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Adams, and a son-in-law, Leslie Adams. He is survived by step daughters Barbara Dolan and Jimmy of Trinidad and Liz Revuelta and Manuel of San Luis Obispo, MX. Grandchildren: Rob Adams and Pam, Kim Smart and Mike, of McCamey, Melanie Bradley and Blue of Ft. Worth, Jaime Therwhanger and Tobby of Levelland, Stefani Greenwood and Zane of Greenwood, Hali Bauman and Jeff of Rockwall ,Craig Prickett and Kristi of Midland, Brandon Revuelta and Jason Revuelta of San Luis Obispo, MX, Casey Gilliam and Josh of Frisco and Marcus Dolan of Lubbock.
He had 20 great grandchildren: Erin Mann and Robert, Shelbi Adams and Cody, Carson Greenwood, Brooke Greenwood, Zoey Greenwood, Duncan Greenwood, Kody Duncan, Braden Grady, McKenna Ford, Gunner Adams, Avery Adams, Audrey Bauman, Riley Bauman, Jase Bradley, Gia Bradley, Rylen Prickett, Aiden Gilliam, Quinn Gilliam, Palo Revuelta and Inez Revuelta.
He had 4 great great grandchildren: Oakley Mann, Gentry Mann, Raven Zamora, Colton Zamora.
There are many more step grandchildren in his extended families and he felt about them like he did the Marines, once a Pawpaw always a Pawpaw.
He is also survived by three sisters and three brothers: Lucille Carlton of Tyler, Bobbie Rogers of Weatherford, Pat Hardage and John of Georgetown, Robert Duncan and Barbara and Kenneth Duncan and Mickie all of Cumberland, OK, and George Duncan and Sherrie of Edmond, OK., and numerous nieces and nephews.
He has filled our lives with so much love, laughter and memories that he will live on in our hearts forever.
Services will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the First Baptist Church in McCamey with Reverend Byron Bitner officiating. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
