Mary A. Cavazos

Mary A. Cavazos passed away peacefully with family at her side on Thursday, February 23, 2023. She was born on October 13, 1954 in Odessa, TX. to Maria Acosta.

While working in Grandfalls, TX, she met the Love of her Life (Viejo), Joe Cavazos. They were married in Ralls, TX. on April 28, 1973. After marriage, Mary and Joe moved to Crane, where they settled and raised their four children, Joe Jr., Jacob, Jennifer, and Carmelita.

Mary worked many different jobs, but it was on September 1, 1994 when she began her career at Crane Independent School District. She walked the hallways of Crane Elementary for twenty-nine years. She served many roles for the district, but her most important roles were being a wife, mother and grandmother. She was a devout Catholic and a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Maria Acosta, sister, Manuela Zuniga, and brother, Sammy Acosta.

Mary is survived by her husband, Joe Cavazos Sr.; her sons, Joe Cavazos Jr., wife Rebecca, and Jacob Cavazos, wife Amanda; her daughters, Jennifer Leyva, husband Carlos, and Carmelita Velasquez; her grandchildren, Big CJ, Celeste, CJ, Talon, Selena, Joaquin, Josiah, Christian, Julianna, Elma, Elijah, EvieJo, and Nicholas; her brother, Danny Acosta, wife Jena.

Visitation will begin on Monday, February 27, 2023 at 10am with a Rosary to follow at 7pm at the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home & Chapel in Crane. Funeral Mass will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Crane. Burial will follow at the Crane County Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Larry Zuniga, Lawson Zuniga, Hayden Zuniga, Jesse Joe Cavazos, Johnny Andrew Cavazos, Mark Cavazos, and Michel Cavazos.
