Lewis Milton Smith
Rankin - Our Dad, Lewis Milton Smith, age 84, went to be with our Lord and Savior March 22, 2010 after a short illness. He worked hard, played hard and loved a good story. He was born to Jack and Gertrude Smith in Ozona, Texas on October 13, 1925. Lewis attended school in Rankin, but graduated from Schreiner Military Institute in Kerrville, TX. He served in the Navy during WWII, met and married Viola Whitney in 1944 while serving at Couer'dalene, Idaho. They returned to Rankin after the war.

Our Dad was a cowboy for life. He loved ranching from a very early age. He carried his weight on his Dad's ranch and continued his passion for ranching through his adult years. He loved high school football and followed the Red Devils across the state. He served on the school board and was a member of the ASC committee for many years. He was a respected member of the community and was always willing to open his heart and hand to those in need. He and Viola enjoyed 60 years of marriage. Lewis was preceded in death by Viola and two children Jackie and Wanna Jean.

Lewis is survived by John Smith and his wife Melba of Midland, TX and Lynn Hill and her husband Jack of Magnolia, TX. His grandchildren include Ashleigh Ellen Smith of Houston, TX, Jessica Jean Melton of Tennessee, Whitney Morgan Elise Hill and Lela Kathryn Koerting Hill of Magnolia, TX.

The graveside service will be held at the Rankin Cemetery on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 10:30 am with Matthew Williams officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane. The family asks that any memorials be sent to West Texas Boys Ranch in San Angelo, TX.
