James Brunson

James Gordon Brunson, Jr. passed away in Abilene, TX on February 28, 2016. He was born on March 14, 1938 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas to James Gordon, Sr. and Mollie (Stevens) Brunson. He grew up in Crane, TX, attending Crane Schools and Sul Ross State University before serving several years in the U.S. Army. He married Mollie Janis Martin on April 14, 1961. They lived in Crane and had two children, Julie and Kip. James worked for Getty Oil Company and was active in coaching Little League Baseball, as a leader in the Crane County 4-H Club and as a member of the Crane Country Club. He moved to Ft. Stockton in 1995; retiring from Texaco/Getty in 1999 after 36 years of exemplary service. While living in Fort Stockton James met many new friends, including Mary Margaret Hamilton. They were married on September 14, 2006 and shared many good times until her death on January 9, 2011. James was an excellent golfer, and enjoyed fishing, travelling and working in his yard and garden. He enjoyed sports and seldom missed an event involving kids or grandkids.

He is survived by children, Julie Childs of Lubbock, TX. and Kip Brunson of Karnes City, TX and granddaughter, Katie Brunson of Weatherford, TX. By his brother Bobby Brunson and wife Jeni D of Littlefield, TX and sister Edna Turner and husband Raymond of Abilene, TX. Also, by special friends Mollie and Jerry Varnado of Abilene, TX, as well as several nieces and nephews. Also, by Mary Margaret’s children: Shelley Hamilton, Gayle Henderson and Carl Hamilton of Fort Stockton and Jonanne Ledford of Granbury, TX. A special Thank You goes to Dr. Sandra Hazelip for the superb care she provided over the last four years.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 3 at 2:00pm at East Hill Cemetery in Fort Stockton, TX. Arrangements are under the care of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.
