Douglas Chrane, 87, former teacher and civic leader in Crane, Texas, passed away in Lubbock Saturday evening, October 10 , 2009. Mr. Chrane was born on a farm in Brown County, Texas, May 30, 1922. Graduating at 16 from Early High School and at 19 from Daniel Baker College, he began a teaching career before he was 20 years old that spanned 38 years. Along the way, he picked up a Master's Degree from Sul Ross University, served as head of the math department for Crane Schools for twenty years, sponsored numerous school clubs and activities and inspired thousands of students.

Before and after retirement, he was a tireless worker for the community. He was an elder in the Church of Christ for over 30 years, served as charter president of the Crane Evening Lions Club, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Outstanding Citizen of Crane in 1983, and was active in many other groups.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, LaVerne, in 2003. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Michael H. Chamales of Lubbock; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Billie Chrane of Austin; two grandchildren, Michael S. Chamales and wife Melissa of Lubbock, and Michelynda Crossnoe and husband Reagan of Amarillo; three great-grandchildren, Autumn Crossnoe, Alexander Chamales, and Cole Crossnoe ; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family will be receiving friends from 10 a.m. until 12 noon on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home in Crane. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, at the Mary Street Church of Christ with burial to follow in the Crane County Cemetery.
