CORA G. "PUNK" McFADDEN

RANKIN: On February 15, 2009, Cora G. "Punk" McFadden passed away in Midland, Texas at Midland Memorial Hospice of Midland after a 6 year battle with kidney cancer.

Punk was born in Rankin, TX on August 17, 1936 and resided all her life there with the exception of a brief time spent in Sonora, TX. She attended Rankin Public Schools until she was 16 years of age and eloped with Leslee Lee McFadden on February 14, 1953; her late husband of 55 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, mother Zona Evelyn "Sug" Black-Boggs-Bushager and father, C.B. "Mutt" Black. She is survived by two daughter, Mrs. Audrey Lee Whatley and her husband J.B., and Patty Rae Ezell; as well as one granddaughter, Leslee Ray Cornwell and her husband Tyson; and one great granddaughter, Caitlynn Brooke Cornwell.

Throughout her 72 years, Punk was always an active participant in life. She and Leslie owned and operated the Rankin Drug Store on Main Street and served meals and snacks for most of Rankin's school children as well as the townspeople. She and Leslie also ran the American Junior Rodeo Association (AJRA) for 25 years and loved all the kids in the association as if they were their own. She served as Mayor of Rankin from 1993 until she resigned in the summer of 2008 due to her health problems. Punk also served or belonged, at one time in the following organization: Beta Sigma Phi, Rankin Chamber of Commerce, Rankin Cemetery Association, Rankin Museum Board, Yellow Rose Garden Club, and as a Proud Community supporter. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rankin, and had served in the past on their host committee as well.

Punk received the following honors throughout her life: Beta Sigma Phi Valentine Sweetheart and Girl of the Year, 4-H Clover Award for years served as a 4-H adult leader, was inducted
May 9th, 2000 in the Permian Basin Senior Hall of Fame, and honored in 2001 by the Permian Basin Girl Scout Council as one of the "Women of Distinction" from the Permian Basin. She loved the sport of rodeo and the City of Rankin from the sewer system to the street flags to its water supply.

Memorials are requested to be made to the Rankin Cemetery Association in Rankin, Texas.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Rankin with interment to follow in the Rankin Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
