ALICE MARIE RHODES

McCAMEY: Alice Marie Rhodes, 94, born November 19, 1914 in Alba, Texas went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 9th, 2008 in Midland, Texas. Marie was the daughter of Hurchel Britton and Bessie Cavilla Kay Britton, both deceased.
In 1929 Marie moved with her family to Wink, Texas where she completed her schooling. On February 23, 1931 she eloped with Mart Rhodes to Carlsbad, New Mexico. Mart took his new bride to Bakersfield, Texas where they began 59 years of wedded life. Mart worked in the oilfields, and the family followed his work to Kermit, Snyder, Big Spring, back to Bakersfield, and to McCamey where they settled in 1952.
Marie was a faithful supporter of her church and actively served in several capacities, including Sunday School teacher, Youth leader, song leader, and secretary/treasurer. In the early 70's she served as Pastor of a small non-denominational church located at the corner of West 5th Street & Emerson in McCamey, TX. She loved the Lord with all her heart and loved to tell of all His many blessings to her and her family.
Because she lived what she believed, and through her dedication and devotion to her Christian faith, she touched the lives of a host of people. She was often called upon for her superior prowess as a "mighty prayer warrior", and she prayed daily for her family, friends and others.
Beginning in 1987 Marie had a very long running ministry at the McCamey Convalescent Center where she led a weekly devotional for the residents. She was inducted into the Area Agency on Aging of the Permian Basin Regional Planning Commissions's "Senior Hall of Fame" in May, 2004 for "Your unfaltering tenacity to share your Christian nature and time with nursing home residents is a treasure to behold. You enlighten residents, provide a powerful role model to the lives you touch, while lifting the spirit."
Marie was the 2005 honored recipient of McCamey's Chamber of Commerce Pioneer Award.
In her younger days Marie was quite an angler. She loved to wade the river fishing for channel catfish using a cane pole rigged with a bobber, & lead weight, baited with worms or minnows. Often she caught more fish than anyone else.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Mart Rhodes and by their infant son, James Marvin Rhodes; twin brothers, Ray Britton and Kay Britton; and grandson, Clay Anthony Gilham.
She is survived by three children, son Lowell "Dusty" Rhodes of McCamey, TX; daughters, Marta Gilham & husband, Chester of Crane, TX ; and Janice Mason & husband, Roger of McCamey, TX; her brother, Hurchel Britton and his wife Janie of Livingston, TX; a sister, Alma Gene Dickerson of Gorman, TX; six grand children; 8 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Marie will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her wonderful sense of humor, and her undefeatable spirit. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.
